Customer Challenge

Prolucid’s customer, a global leader in signalling and control technology for rail-bound mass transit and mainline transportation, received a 4-year contract to provide a communications-based train control (CBTC) test facility for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) New York City Transit’s (NYCT) Culver test track project in the US. The first phase of the project required extensive proof-of-concept testing to determine the interoperability potential of various control systems. Prolucid was contracted to develop a proof-of-concept solution to be used in simulation.

Prolucid Solution

Prolucid designed and delivered a solution that provided an interface between the customers Ethernet-based system, responsible for simulating train movement, and a third party onboard control unit, responsible for train control and monitoring.

    • Utilized National Instruments CompactRIO and LabVIEW programming environment, which allowed for rapid development of integrated software for FPGA, real-time, and desktop components.
    • Designed and implemented a system to read high-speed Ethernet traffic and convert the data to continuous analog data in a deterministic manner with minimal latency or positional error.
    • Utilized FPGA to accurately simulate train wheel encoder outputs from received motion data. This provided an ideal solution for converting discrete digital data into a continuous analog based signal.
    • Developed a remotely connected user interface for analysts to monitor input and output signals and conversion accuracy.
    • Logged input and output data to file for future analysis in order to evaluate system performance.


Prolucid’s system design and software development expertise combined with National Instruments CompactRIO platform allowed for the development of a system that could perform high speed conversion in an accurate, reliable and deterministic manner. This system exceeded interoperability targets specified by the customer and is currently being used in the simulation phase of the 4-year project.
