Customer Overview

Toronto-based start up, Quantum Dental Technologies (QDT), developed a device used for the early detection and monitoring of tooth decay. The Canary System™ is a pain-free, safe and non-invasive early detection system built on years of thorough research. QDT approached Prolucid in 2010 to assist in the commercialization of The Canary System™.

Customer Challenge

In order to succeed in the fiercely competitive biotech and biomedical device market, QDT required a product development partner with the technical expertise and industry experience needed to rapidly advance The Canary System™ from lab prototype through commercialization.

Prolucid Solution

    • Prolucid executed and project managed the entire software development process, from low-level component functionality to the customized user-interface.
    • User-interface software design began with extensive research on the end-user and operating environment. Prolucid worked closely with QDT and spent significant time in fast-paced dental practice environments observing the features and functionality required by the end-user.
    • Implemented automatic reporting and test selection filtering in LabVIEW to reduce operator workload, minimize required system knowledge and accelerate the overall testing process.
    • This up-front investment in understanding the end user requirements allowed the software to be designed and developed in such a way that it seamlessly integrated into a dental practice upon completion.
    • Low-level software design began with establishing a thorough understanding of The Canary System’s hardware components and functionality. Leveraging an understanding the device hardware and end-user, Prolucid engineered The Canary System’s™ hardware controls, data processing and core technology software as part of an end-to-end solution.
    • The LabVIEW system development environment from National Instruments (NI) further enhanced Prolucid’s top-down/bottom-up approach to The Canary System’s software design. Using LabVIEW, Prolucid seamlessly integrated all software components into one platform, greatly reducing the development time and accelerating the project execution and delivery.

The Canary System obtained Health Canada approval in April 2011, EU approval in August 2011 and FDA approval in September 2012. With Prolucid’s technical expertise and project management, Quantum Dental Technologies moved rapidly from product prototyping, through the commercialization process to obtain Health Canada approval in just 14 months.

The Canary System won a National Instruments Graphical System Design Achievement Award in the medical device category for 2010. The easy to use interface allowed dentists to generate and display custom patient reports on an interactive, touch-screen monitor for immediate chair side review.
